Saxophone Section Workshop
17th – 19th May
with Lana Law
Ever wondered how those professional Big Bands sound so good? It’s the little things that make the difference in a saxophone section. Lana Law lifts the curtain on how to play better as a section. In this workshop you will discover the secrets of phrasing, length of notes, articulation, blending and balance. Dynamics are key, and Lana will talk about when to follow the leader and how to take charge of the melody line.
Bring your saxophone and be ready to play!
Lana Law picked up the baritone sax at 13 at Burnside High School and knew it was the right instrument for her straight away. After completing her Bachelor of Music (BMus) Degree in Jazz Performance at Massey University she spent time touring the world as a professional musician. Her passion is teaching students and groups, both privately and as an itinerant music teacher and Band Director in schools. Lana is the co-founder and Music Director of NZ’s first female big band The All Girl Big Band, and Music Director of the Garden City Big Band. She is in high demand as a session musician for many different types of bands, CD recordings and shows. ….’

Learn to Play Boogie Woogie Piano
24th – 25th May
with Jan Preston
JAN PRESTON’s workshop Learn To Play Boogie and Blues Piano takes piano players, elementary and advanced, on a journey towards playing the exciting and uplifting style of Boogie/Blues Piano.
Participants will learn the many left hand “8-to-the-bar” patterns on which the right hand can improvise, learning to dig into the groove with confident timing, whilst simplifying or embellishing the bass to suit your hand and ability.
And having fun!
Workshops ideally have a capacity of around 12 players with access to a keyboard or piano each or between them.
By the way, it’s also possible to add lyrics to the boogie/blues beat, so players may even want to write their own song!
The workshop runs about one hour and Jan will hand out notes which can be taken away and used as follow up.
JAN PRESTON has been a professional piano player, singer and composer for more than 40 years. She has taught film composition at the Australian Film School in Sydney where she lives, as well as conducting many piano workshops at festivals throughout Australia and NZ. From a background in classical music with a long-term interest in composition and song writing, Jan has won 5 music awards for her soundtracks and CDs, and performs side by side with the greatest contemporary boogie piano players in the world today.
She is the co-author of a tutoring book She Plays Boogie and Blues Piano published through Tredition in Germany.

An annual event that has been hosted in Hanmer Springs for many years. This same event now has a new twist. The Amuri Community Arts Council have passed the baton over to the Music and Arts Hanmer Springs Trust.
Our aim is to offer exciting workshops in a range of music and arts subjects. A continuation of the amazing event that already has an established history.
These workshops will all be held in Hanmer Springs. We are working towards offering these in the Soldiers Block in the hospital grounds. A combination of local and national tutors will lead participants in a learning experience second to none.
Join us in gorgeous Hanmer Springs for a 2 day break away from your usual routine. Immerse yourself in a group environment focused on extending your skills in an inclusive and friendly way.
There will be a social gathering and official opening on the evening before workshops start. Tutors work will be on display at this event. An opportunity to meet and greet all those involved – Tutors, participants, organisers.
At the end of the workshops a gathering to share learning and give feedback will be held.
Choose your workshop, gather a group of friends, book your accommodation and start an annual pilgrimage to join us at this event…
