NZ Sing In for KIDS

NZ Sing In for KIDS

NZ Sing In for kids – Specific age group e.g. 9 – 12 years

2 hour workshop [50 mins – 20 mins (morning tea or afternoon tea) – 50 mins]

Singing is fun at all ages but what are some of the New Zealand songs for kids that make us unique, that affirm who we are and tell stories that we can relate to from our environment, from our cultures and/or from our own NZ composers and artists.

This workshop tunes up the children’s voices, helps them feel the excitement of making music together with body and vocal percussion. It uses New Zealand repertoire to learn about the social relevance of music as a means to express and capture our experiences and stories as an art form.

ALL GIRLS BIG BAND

ALL GIRLS BIG BAND

All Girl Big Band: a very tight, disciplined group; a powerhouse of sound.

The All Girl Big Band is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Formed at the beginning of 2016, the group brings together talented female jazz musicians from around Christchurch.

Most of the band members are professional musicians or music teachers with a wide range of ages, from high-school-student age to the most mature member, Jill Fenton, who is 77 and took up the trombone in her late 40s.

“The band has a great vibe and everyone brings a super energetic and positive nature to our rehearsals and concerts. We love playing in bands with the lads; however, the idea was to celebrate the female musicians of the city, and we feel privileged to be able to fill the numbers of a full big band.” – Kate Taylor

Taylor, who is the vocal tutor at Ara Music Arts, first developed the idea for an All Girl Big Band alongside saxophonist and music director Lana Law.

At first it seemed “a crazy, out of the box idea”, but then they realised they knew enough women who could make up a big band.

The All Girl Big Band debuted at In the Loop at the Court Theatre as part of their Hidden Artists segment. Since then they have had stunning success with gigs for Jazz After Work, and the Swingtown Rebels.
